Mystery Solved!
How George Atzerodt, Assassination Conspirator,
Escaped from Washington, D.C.

The Lincoln assassination conspirators each had assignments. John Wilkes Booth was to shoot Lincoln. Booth succeeded. Lewis Powell was to murder Secretary of State William Seward. Powell hideously wounded Seward, slashing open his face, but failed to kill him. George Atzerodt was to murder Vice-President Andrew Johnson, using a large Bowie knife. Atzerodt came within a few feet of Johnson, then panicked and fled. Checkpoints had been set up all around Washington DC. How Atzerodt evaded capture was unknown until Beverly Lowry discovered the court-martial of Sgt. Lewis Chubb. One photograph. Here is the full story,
published 2002 in 8.5 by 11 inch format.
