Civil War Rockets
Civil War Rockets tells the story of a weapon that began with great promise, and faded into prolonged bureaucratic squabbles. PGT Beauregard quarreled with Jefferson Davis. Captain Greer of the Texas foreces quarreled with many layers of bureaucracy. The commander of the Union's rocket battalion was a con man, whose wild promises may have reflected syphilitic brain disease.
One test rocket exploded, nearly killing Abraham Lincoln and half his cabinet. A legendary two-stage rocket, fired from Richmond, missed Washington and may have gone into orbit. A cautionary (and often amusing) tale of how over-promised weapon systems get sold to the government. 2012, CreateSpace, 109p.
